Why do we need to exfoliate?

August 11, 2017

Our skin has a natural “shedding/exfoliating” process called desquamation. A healthy and young skin does this all on its own and requires no help from us. However, due to ageing, our environment and free radicals that our skin is exposed to on a daily basis - this natural process slows right down. This creates a build-up of excess dead skin which can contribute to a “dull” , thickened looking skin, creating  a barrier to sebum (the natural oils produced by skin). In turn this can contribute to break outs and can block proper penetration of products and their potent ingredients, thereby not allowing your skin to fully benefit and thrive from these products.

It is important to note – that the aim of exfoliation is not to completely rid our skin of dead cells. Dead skin cells are vital for a healthy skin as they make up our top layer of skin and acid mantle (our skins protector). Stripping the skin too much of these cells with harsh products or treatments is in fact counter-productive. Because our skin requires these dead cells to function correctly, when we take too much away our skin basically freaks out, thinks it is under attack and produces more than before! Our skin is first and foremost our body’s defensive shield after all.

We want to encourage the skins natural process of desquamation – and we can achieve it through the use of correct product and treatments.

Here is a few of what we have to offer with regards to exfoliation at Pure Indulgence:

Environ Peels

Peels sound really scary! And some of them can be! But trust me – we’re not about to peel your face off!!

The Environ peels we use will not unnecessarily injure the skin like some acid and chemical peels can. They are designed to gently exfoliate and hydrate the skin without disrupting the skins natural barrier. This allows further penetration and opening the door for the powerful ingredients contained in the aftercare and at home products, to help with your areas of concerns/ skin problems. In helping aid desquamation we speed up the cell renewal process – which basically means  we are giving our skin cells a kick up the bum to work more efficiently (as they did when they were younger!), stimulating collagen and elastin formation and hyaluronic acid production which by default makes our skin appear more vibrant, youthful  and hydrated!

Environ Alpha Hydroxy Gel & Cream

This is a light AHA product that can be used at home as part of a weekly or monthly treatment. It has the same principals as a peel but is not as advanced. The alpha Hydroxy gel is designed for problematic skins such as excess oil and acne, but the skin must have been using Alpha Hydroxy Cream first. The cream is for all skin types and once again, this exfoliant will ensure you skin is absorbing and benefitting from the aftercare.

Janesce Gentle Enzyme Peel

The girls at PI love to use this product just before an evening out as it instantly makes the skin look and feel vibrant and hydrated!  It smells as good as it feels and it’s completely organic, containing Papaya Enzymes that gently break down excess skin cell build up and help aid in our skins natural exfoliation process.

Janesce Gentle Clearing Wash

This exfoliant is designed for acne and problematic skins. It absorbs excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural oils. It contains almond meal (not shells) and herbs. It can also be used as a mask for healing acne.

Pure Fiji Exfoliating Scrub

This is our only manual scrub. It contains natural jojoba beads, which help to gently loosen the dead skin cells. These beads are made of jojoba wax – which means they do not scratch, irritate or strip the skin. They are also bio degradable so they do not harm our environment once being washed away.

I hope this sheds some light on exfoliation and the amazing options we have here at Pure Indulgence, the importance of exfoliation within your in spa treatments and also as part of your home care routine,  as well as how important it is to exfoliate correctly.

If you have any further questions in regards to exfoliation feel free to get in touch with us :)
